The ultimate reward of being a consultant
What’s the ultimate reward of being a consultant?
It’s not just helping a client hit a target. It’s watching the exact moment clarity sparks confidence.
Recently, I started mentoring an incredible feminist group on their fundraising strategy. And on paper, they are a dream client:
- They have strong, established relationships with donors
- They have a crystal-clear, rock-solid mission statement
- Their day-to-day activities are deeply impactful
But they were hitting a wall that many brilliant nonprofits face: they struggle to describe what they do briefly and in simple words.
When you are deeply entrenched in doing the work, summarizing it for the outside world can feel impossible. You want to say everything all at once.
So, during our session this morning, we went back to the foundations. We started drafting their Theory of Change, focusing entirely on connecting HOW they do their work to WHY they do it. We stripped away the complexity to find the core narrative, and by the end of the meeting, the team leader said to me: "This was a 10 out of 10 meeting! I feel so powerful and inspired!"
Hearing that is the best reward a consultant can ever ask for.
Fundraising isn’t just about writing proposals or chasing grants. It’s about finding the clarity that empowers change-makers to own their story and speak their truth with confidence. And nothing helps better than drafting charts in the morning! 😁
